Mosquito-Repelling Scents: Look Beyond the Smell

Ask what the product does.

A fragrance name does not tell you the application site, protection time, or target insect. For example, a lemon-scented household product is not interchangeable with a skin repellent just because both smell citrusy. Check the actual product rather than assuming that a familiar scent establishes mosquito protection.

Avoid treating a homemade scented mixture as equivalent to a product evaluated for your intended use. Growing a fragrant plant is a separate question from choosing a formulated product.

Compare the label, not the fragrance.

EPA’s finder covers registered skin-applied repellents. Use it to narrow that category, then read the current label on the product you plan to use.

• Target: does the product list mosquitoes, rather than a different pest?
• Use: is it intended for skin, clothing, or another application site?
• Duration: does its listed protection time fit your outdoor activity, and what are the reapplication instructions?
• Restrictions: check age and application directions. Do not assume a product is suitable for pets.
