Do Bug Zappers Kill Mosquitoes?
Bug zappers may kill the occasional mosquito without reducing bites, according to UNH Extension. Here’s why, and where to start instead.
A catch count is not control
UNH Extension advises against electric bug zappers for mosquito management: they may kill occasional mosquitoes without reducing the problem. A collection tray does not establish which insects were caught or whether biting decreased.
Ask what a device attracts and what evidence supports its intended use before judging it by visible activity.
Different traps do different jobs
A light-based zapper, a monitoring trap, and a professionally maintained mosquito station have different purposes. They should not be compared only by the word “trap.”

Start with the yard
Note where bites happen and whether activity clusters near planting, seating, or water-holding items. Those details help frame an inspection.
