Where Do Mosquitoes Hide Around Your Yard?
Adult mosquitoes can rest in dark, humid places such as under patio furniture, in carports, and in garages. Check those sheltered areas separately from water-holding containers, where larvae and pupae develop. The place you notice bites is a starting point for inspection, not proof of the breeding source.
Look beyond the open lawn.
CDC identifies dark, humid shelter as a place adult mosquitoes rest. Start with the outdoor spaces you use and note nearby shelter:
- Patio seating: look beneath tables and chairs, especially where the space stays shaded.
- Carports and garages: note activity in sheltered areas and whether doors are routinely left open.
- Planting beside a seating or play area: point out shaded vegetation where you notice mosquitoes, without assuming every plant needs removal.
Resting areas and breeding sites are different.
Mosquito larvae and pupae live in water with little or no flow. That is different from an adult resting under furniture or in vegetation. We check both resting spots and standing water when we inspect your yard.
Do not assume a nearby flowing stream is the source of every mosquito in the yard. Look at the property’s accessible conditions and discuss water features individually.
How to recognize mosquito larvaeShow the places you use and what has changed.
Point out the outdoor table, pet areas, and shaded corners, then identify any separate spots that hold water. Describe whether activity is new, follows rain, or happens during a particular outdoor routine.
For example, “near the chairs during afternoon play” is a more useful starting point than “everywhere.” You don’t need to identify the mosquito or find its source before calling. Mention new planters, stored items, irrigation changes, and areas you want excluded or reviewed before treatment.
Record when mosquitoes are activeIf the problem is inside, check entry points too.
Repair window and door screens and avoid leaving doors propped open. Finding mosquitoes in a garage or house does not by itself establish where they developed. Check indoor containers for standing water too.
