A Practical Patio Checklist for Fewer Mosquito Problems

Walk from the chairs to the door.

Look at the places you actually sit and the items around them. CDC identifies dark, humid areas beneath patio furniture as adult resting places and recommends maintaining containers and screens.

• Planters and saucers: make water-holding parts accessible for regular care.
• Stored toys, buckets, and spare pots: check for collected water and put unused items away or turn them over.
• Under furniture: note sheltered spots where mosquitoes are noticeable. This is an observation, not an instruction to spray every surface.
• Screens and doors: repair openings in an enclosed porch and keep doors closed. An open patio has no equivalent screen barrier.

Make the space easier to maintain.

Once a week, empty and scrub water-holding containers such as saucers and birdbaths. Tightly cover stored water. Permanent water features need individual care rather than a blanket instruction to drain or treat them.

Arrange pots and stored items so the next inspection is easy. For example, moving an unused bucket into covered storage removes one item from your outdoor water-check routine. Keep service access clear and tell your technician about landscaping changes.

Match the plan to how you use the patio.

If mosquitoes keep interrupting meals or play, describe where and when that happens and what maintenance you have done. Tell us about pets, edible plants, water features, and whether avoiding spraying is a priority.
