When Do Mosquitoes Come Out? Timing Your Backyard Routine

There is no universally bite-free hour.

CDC explains that mosquitoes bite during both day and night, with different species peaking at different times. Even within a species, regional patterns can vary. Dawn, afternoon, and evening observations can all matter. A timetable alone cannot identify what is in your yard.

Moving dinner earlier may change your experience, but it does not establish that the new time is mosquito-free. Use the activity you actually notice to describe the problem, while keeping bite-prevention measures in your outdoor routine.

Activity and development respond to conditions.

Temperature and other environmental factors influence the mosquito life cycle. One warm day or chilly night doesn’t mark the start or end of mosquito season.

Notice where and when you get bitten.

Tell us where and when you’ve noticed mosquitoes during your usual time outside. A quick note is enough.

• Conditions and changes: recent rain or irrigation, new containers, or a change in where you sit.
• Pattern: one occurrence or something noticed repeatedly during the same routine.

Plan protection around the activity, not just the clock.

CDC recommends EPA-registered repellents used according to their labels and loose-fitting long sleeves and pants. Consider these measures for daytime gardening as well as evening meals. Follow product directions, including when to reapply.
